"About a year after adopting Duke, his quick accidentally got clipped during a nail trim and his anxiety began to steadily increase anytime we tried to get his nails clipped. We tried EVERYTHING including pre-appointment medication, treats, lick mats, covering his eyes and ears, buying new clippers, doing it at home, and nothing was working. We were finally at the point where we had to fully sedate him just to get his nails trimmed. His anxiety got so severe through this process that he began fighting the injection to get sedated and we could no longer safely put a needle in to sedate him, even with a muzzle on and multiple people restraining him. It was super traumatic for Duke and for my husband and I. I’ll be honest and say that my husband and I were skeptical at first, thinking, “how is this really going to work for Duke?” We thought he was past the point of help but we decided to give it a chance anyways and signed up. We quickly began to see HUGE improvements in just the first six sessions. Maggie spent the first couple of sessions just getting Duke comfortable with her (as he isn’t a fan of strangers). With her expertise, it wasn’t long before Duke would run towards me with the nail clippers in my hand! I couldn’t believe it! Fast forward to 3 months into training (going once a week), and Duke has had 14 nails clipped while he is unmuzzled and unrestrained. He is confident with the cooperative care process and the trust that has been repaired between Duke and us is priceless. There is so much power in choice and we would recommend cooperative care, and Practical Obedience, to anybody and everybody that has a dog."
